Growing old is a privilege.

But when it comes to eye health, aging can bring on several ocular conditions and diseases like glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, cataracts and diabetic retinopathy.

Vision impairment decreases one's ability to perform activities of daily living and increases the risk for depression.

Whether you need reading glasses, bifocals, post-cataract surgery care, or eye disease co-management, we've got you covered!

At EyeCare Specialties Pediatric & Adult in Wexford, we believe that prevention is the best medicine. That’s why annual eye exams are so important for seniors. Detecting eye conditions early on can help prevent or delay vision loss, keeping your vision clearer for longer. Some serious eye conditions don’t present noticeable symptoms until vision loss has occurred. Fortunately, these can be detected in their early stages by your eye care professional during your eye exam.

If an eye disease is diagnosed, we’ll create a custom treatment plan and monitor your condition closely to ensure the best outcome.

Senior Vision FAQs

Can presbyopia be corrected?

Presbyopia, age-related farsightedness, affects your eyes’ ability to focus on near objects. You may become aware of presbyopia once you begin holding books and newspapers at arm’s length to be able to read them. This condition is a natural part of the aging process and affects virtually all adults in their 40s. Our eye doctors will diagnose and help correct your presbyopia so you can see clearly again. They'll provide you with corrective glasses and/or contact lenses, such as monovision and multifcoals.

What are the most common vision problems in the elderly?

The most common causes of vision loss among the elderly are age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, cataracts and diabetic retinopathy.

  • Age-related macular degeneration is characterized by the loss of central vision.
  • Glaucoma results in visual field loss.
  • Cataracts cause blurred vision and faded colors among the elderly.
  • Diabetic retinopathy is characterized by blurred vision and floaters, among other symptoms.
  • Other conditions include dry or watery eyes and floaters.

Because many of these conditions may initially be asymptomatic, it's critical that elderly patients undergo routine eye exams. The earlier these conditions are detected, the better the treatment outcome.

Can macular degeneration be prevented?

Although there’s no sure-fire method for preventing eye disease, certain lifestyle habits can put the odds in your favor. To help ensure healthy vision for a lifetime, wear high-quality sunglasses whenever outdoors, quit smoking if you do, eat eye-healthy foods, and ask your optometrist about taking AREDS supplements. Most importantly, regular visits with your eye doctor are crucial to keeping your vision sharp throughout your golden years.

We have had nothing short of amazing experiences every time we have had appts with eyecare specialis... ts. My son went through the vision therapy program completing 24 weeks. He was so excited to go every week and always had the best time with Miss Maggie. He made such amazing progress with his reading, focusing and memory skills during his vision therapy session. We were beyond amazed at how much it helped with so many aspects of life. We now go here for all our eye appts and have been so impressed with the care provided by Dr McChesney as well as the friendliness from all staff members. We recommend this office for any vision needs.

What a wonderful eye care practice! My appointment was flawless from the moment I stepped off the el... evator...every person was so kind and caring! Dr. Shuster was so patient and explained everything in great detail. I've been here before for routine eye exams/glasses/contacts (always a great experience), but this time it was for a medical issue-I highly recommend this practice for all eye care needs! EXCELLENT!

Pediatric & Adult vision care has extremly great service. I was going to a different eye doctor for... years and then moved to Sewickley. Every time I go all associates are nice, friendly and most importantly Knowledgable. The most recent visit was this past week in which they squeezed me in for an emergency eye infection. I was there, got seen and medicine and a day later already my eye feels a lot better. Many thanks to all that work there.

My eye appointment was perfect in every way! Every single person I encountered was friendly, helpful... and patient! (Julia, Eve and Sean to name a few!)Dr. Skoner is excellent and took time to discuss my eye health and vision issues. I even purchased glasses and contacts that day...the price was incredible-I never thought it could be less expensive at the Drs. office than places like Sams Club, but it was! I highly recommend Pediatric & Adult Vision Care!

Kind people there. Clean office. The vision therapy has made a huge difference in my kids' reading, ... focusing, and tracking. It has made a huge difference for my post tbi eyes. My youngest improved 127 points (teacher said 40 would be impressive) on her PA STAR test for reading. This is after just half her recomended therapies. Also, we had seen a specialist for here eye condition, but Dr. Prazer tested for kore issues and the vision therapy has been remarkably more helpful that what the children's hospital specialist did with her. Highly recommend! Getting assessed could tell you if life could be made easier. Non-surgically.
